Girls Bedroom – Petite Refresh

July 21, 2015

I’m not sure ‘serial updater’ is a thing but I think I have this condition. As a lover of creative spaces and homewares I find myself always looking for a ‘refresh’ project.

Whether it’s rearranging a couple of shelves or sawing off bedheads, there is always something to be updated. And totally for my own styling pleasure (my absolute weakness, second to chocolate)!!

I took on a semi-refresh of both the girls bedrooms. With my budget hat on, I decided to keep the major expense items e.g. beds, shelves & floor coverings in place and rework the smaller items within each room. So think artwork, accessories, shelf arrangements, bed linen, throw pillows. The stuff that really gives the room its personality and style.

My obsession with monochrome continues. I decided to weave this into both spaces – I know, I know, some people are not fond of black in kids rooms but hey, I love it – it’s such a good anchor to work with. To soften the palette I added blush pink tones for Ivy and pops of colour for Lola.

The rooms are very much driven by each of their personalities. Lola is bursting with energy – very much the bright, adventurous, wildly infectious, cheeky extrovert (think bold). Ivy is the quiet achiever, very feminine, focused, elegant and centred (think pastel).

The key for me is to mix & match, shop small & support as many talented handcrafters as I can. These little up & comers are so passionate, they make this world a far more interesting place with their wares.

Secondly, I don’t mind a bit of DIY, I love a good hack. It’s a great way to save a few pennies and allows you to roll up your sleeves and get a little crafty. Oh yes.

My process: I base all of my styling on ‘feel’. I trust my gut instinct and play around with placement, colours and textures. I’m all about aesthetics and energy – if it ‘feels’ right, then to me it is.

I’m still playing around with a few little things , yes a slight perfectionist here. At the end of the day its our home and it needs to reflect us. A space that breeds creativity, happiness and love (and hopefully super calm, well rested children… yeah right!) The good thing, there is no time limit, I’ll just potter around moving bits & pieces until my hearts content.

I’ve included a list of stockists below. Check them out and get your ‘style’ hat on. Mix it up and have a play around – you’ll surprise yourself at how creatively therapeutic it can be.
