Surf. Skate. Love. The Zoo Keeper

November 12, 2015

You know those moments when people ask ‘So what do you do?’ You pause & think about the most creative way to jazz up the term ‘Stay At Home Mum’.  It’s the worlds most important job. Raising little people to become good humans. No easy feat.
There are however times that we need a little more ‘something’. An outlet, a side project, an idea bubbling away to remind us that pre-kids; we were passionate, confident, creative individuals. Did this change?

Meet Kelly, The Zoo Keeper. Lover of the sun, sand and saltwater.
Mother, wife and one-half of the edgy, youth culture brand The Zoo Keeper. Kelly found herself craving a little more spice to her Mamahood experience. A project that would allow her to be ‘everything’ to her young family but compliment her passions, lifestyle and killer ideas.

After workshopping ideas with her creative hubby (Ash), The Zoo Keeper brand was born. A perfectly paired husband & wife team based in Melbourne, handcrafting youth-inspired custom skateboards and art prints. Such a natural progression for this dynamic duo, with Ash’s long career in brand design & Kelly the marketing & administration guru, aka Keeper of The Zoo.

Drawing inspiration from surf culture & the freedom of growing up, their authentic creations capture the spirit of youth & that perfect urban, coastal vibe. They handcraft, shape & fit each custom cruiser board out of Australian hardwoods, each having their own unique grain. Sturdy enough for both the young groms & grown-ups to ride. Freehand illustrative typography & design gives a really raw, earthiness to their collection. So much street cred.

The surf and skate culture is a huge part of their family life together, The Zoo Keeper is a true reflection of this. Collaborating with local artists & crafters, supporting up & coming talent, keeps their designs evolving yet always home-grown. They know their roots & their youthful enthusiasm is always at the heart of it.

When asking their advice for others out there looking to explore a new venture, ‘Trying and failing is much better than never trying at all. Don’t be intimidated by the success of others, rather be motivated and inspired as there is plenty of room for everyone to succeed’.
Kudos to that. As a fairly new blogger I’m amazed by the support, the generosity to help a fellow sister out. At the end of the day, if it provides a creative outlet & gives you those ‘fist pump’ moments – then why not?!

The Zoo Keeper have big plans for 2016 so definitely keep an eye on these guys & their expanding range. View their collection of awesome art prints & skate decks online here  & show them some insta-love @thezookeeper_
