As a Christmas treat, I’m taking the girls to their very first ballet. The Australian Ballet production of The Sleeping Beauty, A Storytime Ballet. It’s the real deal. Sydney Opera House, fabulous frocks and enchanting ballerinas. Ivy & Lola could not be more excited, a dream come true. You never forget your first ballet.
With our tickets booked, it seemed only fitting I feature the amazing Andrea Rembeck; Mother & founder behind Tutu Du Monde. Andrea is the creator & maker of whimsical experiences every day, such a delightful brand. I had imagined her living in a castle surrounded by swans. Yes, even us grownups love to daydream too…
Andrea, tell me how Tutu Du Monde came about? Your lightbulb moment?
Upon the birth of my daughter Alyna, I took some time out to enjoy being a mother. When Alyna turned three and was able to voice her opinion she refused to wear anything non-girly and asked for tutu. I embarked on a quest to find one that was not mass-produced, hot pink and polyester. I couldn’t and find anything made from natural materials, cottons and silks- that’s how Tutu du Monde was born, in 2009.
When did you create your first piece? And have you kept it?
I designed the first tutus very much from an adult perspective as I had no experience in children’s wear. So they were pretty much what I would like if I were to wear tutus – scary? Maybe not all that practical but beautiful. I still have the first sample collection – it was so small, only about five pieces.
You have a prominent profile both locally and abroad- did you always feel the brand would evolve into such success?
No, definitely not during the first two years, it was really just a side project along other ‘adult’ design jobs but when publicity started snowballing in the US, I decided to make it my full time job.
Have you had a mentor along the way to help guide and lead you?
Not so much a mentor but I have a great network of girlfriends in businesses – in all sort of fields, from jewelry designers to marketing and advertising experts, stylists etc. so all women with their own businesses and we all support and consult each other which is really beautiful.
It’s great to be able to call on any of them and ask their opinion but also use their network and not just locally, even overseas.
Where do you draw inspiration from when naming each collection?
Finding the right name for a collection is usually a huge team effort, the whole office sits together and has a brainstorm once we’ve finished a campaign shoot and we have the images, they usually tell a story.
Tell us about your latest release, The Wonder Hour. What’s the story behind this collection?
The latest collection ‘The Wonderhour’ captures the magic, joy and expectancy of Christmas and the Holidays, taking us back to that childhood feeling of dream-like anticipation. Fairy queen, prima ballerina or princess, it will transport little girls to the realm of childhood magic and fantasy. Who doesn’t believe in Christmas magic?
Do you ever have a creative block? And if so, how do you remain productive so that you can deliver to deadline?
No, quite the opposite, I wished I could design more. It is definitely my favorite part dreaming up new collections. I need to be across the operational side of the businesses which takes up a significant amount of time too!
Thanks so much Andrea, what an amazing journey. One I’m certain will continue from strength to strength. I have so much love for this brand. It supports a beautifully enchanting world of fantasy for little girls. Creating memories, encouraging little imaginations & the belief that anything is possible.
